We had a chance to witness a very interesting encounter while watching the contestants' films made for One Minutes Jr. The encounter of a form requiring a very to-the-point expression on film and creative attitude with a young fresh spirited generation sensitive to the problems of the world. Young people in their teens made one-minute works from all over the world, Armenia, Iceland, Moldavia, Sweden and Kyrgyzstan just to mention some.

All credit goes to UNICEF, the European Cultural Fund and the Sandberg Institute for this two year initiative, the One Minutes Festival opening its gates wide for teenagers who have met the challenge and tested their own talent with this demanding but exciting task.  There are certainly some for whom making a film has been a wonderful adventure and there are others for whom it meant the beginning of a serious - and maybe long-term-relationship.Whichever the case, I believe that it is essential that young people express their views, feelings and standpoint, that they explore the world through one of the most important tools of communication: motion pictures.

The films competed in two categories "Best of World" with 34 and "Inside Out" with 32 contestants.The pre-selection - of about 200 works - was performed by BBC and Swedish Television. Extra thanks for the great work they have done!

The Jury did not have an easy job choosing the seven filmmakers for each category that is the nominees of this extremely manifold team. Finally when selecting the nominees we aimed at preserving and reflecting the richness of approach, message and filmmakers' attitude. Fourteen young filmmakers from ten countries are the finalists for the two main awards.

The films of both categories have shown proof of an astonishingly acute sense of social justice and justice on the whole, an honest, critical and responsible attitude to reality. They have spoken up for tolerance, social inclusion and important human values such as tolerance and pacifism expressing demand for a violence-free world. To my mind the seven talented nominees of both categories are winners, as they are all here to present their films, and we are winners as well to have the chance of seeing them.

However, as the rules are rules, we had to choose, not an easy task: Twice seven nominees and two of them shall become the award winners of the Best of World and Inside Out categories in 2004. How does an apple compare to grapes? How does one compare bugs making love in a condom a very witty anti-AIDS work to another film against racism and social segregation?

Or let's take a work cleverly calling for children's rights, full of humour and another very expressive one evoking a night in an orphanage full of anxiety. And there is the smart film against smoking and how about the lyrical work touching upon the subject of supporting the seriously ill. And we still had to decide:

I can hear a voice, a child's voice in the night, a silent prayer:

" Dear angel, sent to me by God
I am asking you to teach me how to do good.
I am small, make me big, I am weak make me strong
Please save me from evil.."
And
".. Dear Lord in heavens.." This is a voice in an orphanage.

The film operates with simple tools and a very powerful atmosphere. The way it speaks up against hurting the children, the weak, defenceless ones and against senseless violence leaves a deep impression. Although this prayer is said in an orphanage it echoes in many parts of the world where children suffer abuse. This prayer is said for them too. A very talented and very important work the images of which won't leave us.

And now we come to announcing the winner of the "Best of World" category of One Minutes Jr.

There were lyrical moments, films full of momentum, a fresh look, powerful and dynamic shots. There was warmth and sarcasm in these talented works. From "Caroussel" trough "Revolution" to "Chalkpainting" from "Maffiozi" to "Scars" and "Lost Communication", and "Blip!".

And the winner of the "Best of World" category is:

A beautiful lyrical film with puritanical artistic tools and a convincing knowledge of the profession conveying a metaphorical message with talent. Let's leave the islands of play and the possibility for self-expression untouched and not only on the big city pavements but all around our Planet as well. I believe this is the mission, One Minutes Jr. festival wishes to achieve and that's the secret of its success. Let's preserve these peaceful islands moreover let's create some more!

Moldoványi Ferenc & theoneminuteJr

Az a megtiszteltetés ért bennünket, hogy Moldoványi Ferencet kérték fel   az idei évben az UNICEF, a Sandberg Intézet, és az Európai Kulturális Alapítvány által 12 és 20 éves fiatalok számára rendezett világfesztivál a " theoneminutesJr" zsűrizésére.

A rendező - producer  november 21-én adja át a díjakat Amszterdamban a "Best of World" és az "Inside -Outside" kategória győzteseinek.

A közel ezer egyperces munkákból  az előzsűrizést a BBC és a SVT svéd televízió végzi. A versenyprogram filmjeinek készítői közül, 8 -8 díjra nominált fiatalnak a fesztivál idején műhelyt is szervez a Sandberg Intézet, mely programjának összeállításával szintén a rendezőt- producert bízták meg.

A fesztivál egyébként a tavalyi évben tárta ki először kapuit -  az UNICEF segítségével - a fiatalok előtt, és a kezdeményezés óriási sikert aratott, több nagy európai televíziós társaság mutatott be válogatást az elkészült egypercesekből. 2003-ban a zsűrizésre és díj átadására Emir Kusturicát kérték fel.

De olhos Bem Abertos é um encontro internacional de cinema dedicado ao engajamento político e social em que serao exibidos mais de 40 filmes recentes e inéditos sem perspectiva de exibiçao comercial no Brasil. It's been several years since images of war-torn Kosovo have made the evening news. For the victims of the violent ethnic spat between the Serbs and Albanians, the memory still burns freshly in their minds. On March 15, their recollections of the 1999 atrocities can be seen in Children: Kosovo 2000, a stirring film by Hungarian filmmaker Ferenc Moldovanyi. Interviewing a group of children a year after they survived the horrors, Moldovanyi paints a grim portrait of what happens when revenge gets carried too far. "Gyerekek -Koszovó 2000" televíziós premierje az Egyesült Államokban a Sundance Channel-en

Gyerekek Koszovó 2000 című sokszoros díjnyertes dokumentumfilmünk Egyesült Államokbeli televíziós premierjére február 9-én főműsoridőben került sor igen kedvező visszhang mellett, majd a bemutatót további két sugárzás követte február 16-án és 27-én.

"I like films that have patience, that make the viewer look for a good long time. I think it was important to watch the faces of the children. I think there is a reason for this. The children were given all the time they needed, and we were given time to feel uncomfortable. Also, I have always liked handheld camera work. On the subject matter, I was left with the impression that the NATO bombing didn't resolve the underlying problems in that area. It just reversed the situation. The Serbs became the oppressed and the Albanians became the opressers. Both the Serbs and the Kosovo Albanians were as nationalistic as ever, and revenge seemed very important to those children. The scenes with the Roma refugees were the most disturbing. What did they do to deserve being burnt out of their homes and killed, except accept jobs with the Serbs when that group was in power? I think the film ended with the Serbian children expressing the same kind of anger and vengence as the Albanians, because the film was demonstrating that the war did not resolve the its causes, We all know war creates victims on all sides, but ultimately it seems so useless."

"I kept wanting to hug all the kids in the film as they broke down crying. The worst part is that the atrocities will likely continue against both sides if NATO pulls out of the area. What is needed is forgiveness...the children need to be taught that the revenge they desire (as expressed in the film) will only perpetuate the cruelty and killing. Easier said than done. Pray for Serbs and Albanians!"

Az Írók Boltjában már kapható Moldoványi Ferenc két filmjének napokban megjelent DVD-kiadása. A Magyar Mozgókép Közalapítvány támogatásával, az Engram Film gondozásában napvilágot látott Az Út és a Gyerekek, Koszovó 2000 című alkotások digitális verziója nemcsak Budapesten, de a nagyobb vidéki könyvesboltokban és áruházakban is megtalálható lesz majd, s a kölcsönzés feltételeiről is tárgyalnak már.

Mindkét DVD angol, francia és magyar felirattal került kiadásra, mely tartalmazza az alkotók biográfiáit, és Az Út esetén egy werkfotókból álló montázst is. A kiadványokon megtalálható továbbá egy-egy angol nyelvű booklet a filmek fesztiváli szerepléseivel, díjaival és nemzetközi sajtóvisszhangjaival. Moldoványi Ferenc elmondta a filmhunak, hogy az eddig 700 példányban kiadott DVD lemezeket dolby stereo-ban rögzítették, így Szemző Tibor zenéjét mindenki audio minőségben élvezheti. Az élvezet pedig határokon túlra nyúló, hiszen a felvételeket nem védik különböző nemzetközi kódok, tehát a honlapról történő online rendeléssel bárki élhet külföldön is.

A két film öt kontinens nyolcvan filmfesztiválján 16 díjat nyert el. A munkákat több jelentős televíziós csatorna sugározta, a Gyerekek- Koszovó 2000-ret jövő év februárban a Sundance Channel tűzi műsorára az Egyesült Államokban. A rendező jelenleg új egészestés dokumentum-játékfilmjének, az Egy másik bolygó című, három kontinensen forgó munkájának produkciós előkészítésén dolgozik.

Áprilisban még zajlott az Iraki háború, amikor Tel Avivban ötödik alkalommal rendezték meg a DocAviv nemzetközi dokumentumfilm fesztivált. A rendezvény néhány év alatt jelentős nemzetközi rangot szerzett, és programja is egyre változatosabb lett. Az idén a többek között nemzetközi, izraeli és diák filmekből álló versenyszekciók és a különböző kiegészítő programok vetítéseit több mint 15 ezer néző látogatta. A fesztivál során az igazán színvonalas izraeli dokumentumfilmek mellett benyomásokat szerezhettünk az alkotásokat elősegítő jól átgondolt finanszírozási rendszerről, és néhány fontos ténnyel, elvvel is megismerkedhettünk, amely érdekes összehasonlításra adhat alkalmat a hazai dokumentumfilm készítés vonatkozásában is.
A díjnyertes alkotások mellett megismerkedhetünk néhány jelentős izraeli dokumentumfilmessel és az izraeli filmipar néhány fontos szereplőjével is.

A GYEREKEK KOSZOVÓ 2000 NEW YORKBAN

A Gyerekek-Koszovó 2000 című filmünk New York-i premierjére április 26-án, szombaton 18 órátol kerül sor Manhattan-ben a Modern Művészetek Múzeumának - Illuminated Voices - programjában, melyet a MoMA a Sundance Intézettel közösen szervez a Gramercy Theater-ben.
A vetítésen jelen lesz a rendező-producer Moldoványi Ferenc is. A bemutató érdekessége, hogy az alkotásnak ez lesz a félszázadik fesztiváli szereplése.

Április 26-án 13:30-tól kerül sor ugyanott egy dokumentumfilmes kerekasztal konferenciára, melyen szintén részt vesz a Gyerekek Koszovó 2000 rendezője.

From Long Night's Journey Into Day to Children Underground to Daughter From Danang, the nonfiction cinema supported by the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund exposes social injustices and personal tragedies from around the globe. In "Sundance at MOMA: Illuminated Voices"—the first of an annual collaboration between the two institutions—the best films continue the tradition of resonant political and emotional work.

Take Mercedes Moncada Rodríguez's The Passion of María Elena, a poetic account of one indigenous woman's fight against prejudice in northwestern Mexico. After her three-year-old son is hit and killed by a truck driven by a "white" Mexican, María Elena seeks retribution, turning to both her local Raramuri community in the Sierra Taramura canyon and the city government of neighboring Chihuahua. María Elena's pursuit provides narrative drive, but the film's strength comes from its sensitivity and luminous imagery. When justice finally arrives for María Elena, it is on terms that defy Western sensibilities.

According to program director Diane Weyermann, María Elena epitomizes the type of project the fund aims to help. "Because it is very filmic with untraditional narrative storytelling," she says, describing the doc's formal mirroring of the Raramuri spiritual views on death and destiny, "it would not have been financed by television." The other truly cinematic documentary is Ferenc Moldoványi's Children (Kosovo, 2000), which alternates lyrical visual passages with utterly devastating testimonials from Albanian and Serbian children about their murdered fathers and raped siblings.

Such divided communities dominate the selection. Anat Even and Ada Ushpiz's distressing Detained chronicles three Palestinian widows in Hebron who inhabit an apartment building controlled by Israeli soldiers (and literally share a roof with their snipers), while Amit Goren's Golan interviews Israeli settlers in the Golan Heights. Both films show, at best, an underlying mistrust between the two peoples, and at worse, a blazing hatred. Rwanda's situation appears similarly dire. Anne Aghion's Gacaca, Living Together Again in Rwanda looks at a post-genocide community-based tribunal reminiscent of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but the bitter, traumatized participants experience little truth or reconciliation.

The increasing ideological gap within Iran is explored in two films. Maziar Bahari's And Along Came a Spider is a collection of chilling interviews with a man who murdered 16 prostitutes (he calls himself an "anti-street-woman activist") and shocking conversations with friends and family who support his actions. For a more general cultural survey Thierry Michel's Iran: Veiled Appearances documents religious fanaticism side by side with university students denouncing the Islamic revolution as a "disaster." The most sensationalistic of the bunch, John Friedman and Eric Nadler's Stealing the Fire spins a worthwhile investigation of centrifuge technology and nuclear proliferation into inflammatory agitprop insinuating a German-Iraqi plot against Israel.

For a little hope, turn to Belkacem Hadjadj's A Female Cabby in Sidi Bel-Abbès, which follows the only female taxi driver in the violent Algerian city. Despite rampant sexism and death threats, the charismatic, fearless widow and mother of three keeps on cabbing. Moldoványi Ferenc a DocAvivról

Az április 2. és 7. között megrendezett Tel Avivi Nemzetközi Dokumentumfilm Fesztivál háromtagú Nemzetközi Zsűrijében ott ült Moldoványi Ferenc is, aki egyúttal az izraeli dokumentum helyzetéről forgatott a Magyar Televíziónak. Nem csoda tehát, hogy a kilenc filmből álló versenyprogramon kívül a szintén kilenc indulóval képviselt izraeli szekcióba, illetve a diákdoksik négyesfogatába is belenézett.

- Műfajilag, tematikailag és formailag is rendkívül változatos nemzetközi programot láthattunk. Egyik sem publicisztikai dolgozat, hanem technikailag és időben jól kidolgozott igazi film volt. Külföldön a játékfilmipar kommercializálódásával,- néha úgy érzem, - a alkotói dokumentumfilmek átvették a szerzői filmek szerepét. Kreatívabbak, személyesebbek, merészebbek. Sok híres játékfilmrendező fordul a műfaj felé, például Werner Herzog mozi-dokumentumfilmjének az Idő kerekének hamarosan Torontóban lesz a premierje. Amíg nálunk a szociografikus tradíciók hatására inkább tv-s publicisztikák készülnek, máshol nem az újságírás, hanem a film nyelvén beszélnek a nem fikciósok. Sokkal szituatívabbak, nagyobb szerepe van képeknek és a zenének. - mondta a rendező.

A fődíjat egy 35 milliméterre forgatott moziformátumú spanyol-kubai alkotás, a Balseros (Carles Bosch - Josep M. Domenech.) nyerte el, amely nyolc éven keresztül követte az USA-ba bevándorolt kubaiak életét. Különdíjban részesítették Herz Frank saját életére és klasszikussá vált munkásságára visszatekintő Flashback című munkáját. A zsűri életműdíjnak szánta az elismerést.

- A fesztivál a feszült közel keleti háborús helyzet ellenére zökkenőmentesen kitűnő légkörben zajlott. Eleve szimpatikus a DocAvivban, hogy amíg más fesztiválok olykor csak premierként fogadnak el filmeket, itt már díjazott alkotások is versenyeztek. Igazából nem is a nemzetközi mezőny a hangsúlyos, mert az szinte csak promóciós felületül szolgál az izraeli filmeknek.

Noha Izrael kisebb, mint Magyarország, a dokumentumfilmes szakma működése sokkal egészségesebb, kidolgozottabb, nagyobb az összetartás, nagyobb az érdeklődés, több a pénz. A filmesek destruktivitás helyett szolidárisak egymással, örülnek egymás sikereinek, erős a szakmai lobby, így a politika szinte hozzájuk se mer nyúlni. A dokumentumfilmek teltházakkal mennek, s külön kulturális csatorna gondoskodik a tévében való vetítésükről.

- Beszélgettem az ottani producerekkel rendezőkkel és filmes döntéshozókkal is. Elmesélték, hogy egy videóra készülő, nem túl komplikált módon forgatott film költsége körülbelül 2000 dollár percenként. Az gyors fejszámolást követően 22-23 millió forintos összköltségre jön ki egy ötvenperces film estében. Az Új Izraeli Film Alap körülbelül másfél millió dollárral rendelkezik dokumentumfilmek számára évente, de emellett léteznek más alapítványok és források is, és a televíziók is részt vesznek a dokumentumalkotások megvalósításában. Nem ritkák a nemzetközi koprodukciók sem. Egy folyamatos konfliktushelyzetben élő ország mindennapjai rengeteg témát adnak a filmeseknek és a közönség is nagyon fogékony ezekre az igazán igényesen elkészített munkákra. Bárcsak mi is itt tarthatnánk.

Az ötvenedik fesztiválszereplésen is túljutott Gyerekek - Koszovó 2000 című film rendezője egyébként ismét dolgozni készül, s bár a következő munkájáról nem árult el közelebbit, azt már biztosra ígéri, hogy egy versenyképes, nem csak itthon érthető filmet fog forgatni, noha nem ez az egyetlen, amit az EU-csatlakozás kapcsán érdemes végig gondolni.

Balseros follows a group of Cuban running away from their lives in Havana, risking their lives in improvised rafts, to join their families in America, and experience the American dream. The characters were observed throughout the film with great intimacy. As a jury of three film makers, we were highly impressed by the way the authors captured events as they happened in real time over eight years. The makers of the film elevated this observation into a memorable cinematic experience for the big screen. We felt that the strength of the film lay in its exploration of cultural choices and self identity without ever preaching simple answers - whether it is better to be lying on a beach in Cuba or driving a car in the USA.

Moldoványi Ferenc: Gyerekek - Koszovó 2000 című dokumentumfilmje áprilisban is több fesztiválon vendégszerepel. Ebben a hónapban lesz a 34 ország fesztiváljain 7 díjat nyert doksi ötvenedik fesztiváli bemutatója.

Április 17-én a Párizsi Magyar Intézetben vetítik a rendező jelenlétében, április 25-május 2 között pedig a New York-i Modern Művészetek Múzeumának a Sundance Intézettel közös programját gazdagítja. Ez utóbbi szereplés érdekessége, hogy ez lesz a Gyerekek - Koszovó 2000 ötvenedik fesztiváli bemutatója, mely eddig 7 díjat nyert el a 34 ország fesztiváljain.

Moldoványi Ferenc jelenleg a Tel Avivi Filmfesztiválon tartózkodik, ahová a szervezők meghívták zsűritagjaik sorába.

Pálma, Oroszlán, Leopárd

Magyar díjmérleg - 2002

Az elmúlt esztendő nagy siker volt a magyar filmek számára külföldön - derül ki a Filmunió 2002-es összesítőjéből. A magyar filmek 49 díjat hoztak el a világ fesztiváljairól, köztük egy olyan szép növényt, mint a cannes-i Arany Pálma, és csillogó nagyvadakat, mint a velencei Ezüst Oroszlán és a locarnói Ezüst Leopárd. Az évet 2002 magyar felfedeztettje tetőzte: Pálfi György Hukkléját találták a legjobb elsőfilmnek az Európai Filmdíj kiosztásán.

A világ mintegy 250 nemzetközi filmfesztiválján mutattak be magyar filmeket, s a palettát színesítették azok a magyar filmnapok, amelyeket a világ 20 városában rendeztek meg Abu Dhabitól Los Angelesig. Külön figyelem irányult a magyar filmre az olaszországi magyar kulturális évad kapcsán, ahol Róma mellett Olaszország számos más városában láthatott válogatást a közönség.

2002-ben a magyar filmek 49 díjat hoztak haza a világ filmfesztiváljairól.
Fekete Ibolya Chico, Sopsits Árpád Torzók ill. Kamondi Zoltán Kísértések című játékfilmje ill. Moldoványi Ferenc dokumentumfilmje, a Gyerekek- Koszovó 2000 kapta a legtöbb elismerést, ugyanakkor olyan rendkívül rangos díjakkal is magyar alkotókat jutalmaztak a fesztiválok nemzetközi zsűrijei, mint a cannes-i Arany Pálma, amelyet Mészáros Péter Eső után című rövidfilmje nyert el, a velencei Ezüst Oroszlán, amit Péterffy Zsófia kapott Kalózok szeretője című festmény-animációjáért, vagy a játékfilmek közül Gárdos Péter Az utolsó blues című, munkája, amelyet Arany Piramissal jutalmaztak Kairóban és Mundruczó Kornél Szép napokja, amely Ezüst Leopárdot nyert Locarnóban.

Tarr Béla munkáit világszerte nagy elismerés övezte, bizonyítja ezt filmjeinek retrospektív vetítés sorozata többek között Stockholmban, Bergamóban, Montrealban, Belgrádban, Jeruzsálemben és Thesszalonikiben.

Az év felfedezettje kétség kívül Pálfi György volt, akinek Hukklecímű filmje számos fesztivál díj mellett elnyerte az Európai Film Akadémia Fassbinder díját. A fesztiváli szereplések számát tekintve is a Hukkle vitte el a pálmát, amelynek nemzetközi karrierje tovább folytatódik az idei esztendőben is.

A januári fesztivál naptár szerint bemutják a norvégiai Tromsóban, az Alpok-Adria Fesztiválon Triesztben, s ott lesz két igen rangos európai fesztiválon Rotterdamban és a franciaországi Angers-ban. A tengerentúlon Palm Springs-ben láthatja a közönség.

Rotterdamban egyébként a Hukkle mellett még három film képviseli a magyar filmművészetet. Bemutatják Mundruczó Kornél Szép napok című munkáját, az arany pálmás Eső utánt és Forgács Péter Bibó breviáriumát, amely a múlt évben nagy sikert aratott a cannes-i "Rendezők két hete" szekcióban, s amely egyébként a januári Göteborgi fesztivál programjában is szerepel.

Az audiovizuális művek számára rangos bemutatkozási lehetőség a biarritzi fesztivál, ahol az idén a versenyprogramban szerepel Nordin Eszter Tabu, Mihályfi László Igazságtétel és Orosz Dénes Ott vagy még? című filmje.
